Fault Finding
A tripping consumer unit, a dead socket, lights that flicker for no obvious reason, or an RCD that trips every few days – electrical faults are disruptive, and often the cause isn’t where you’d expect. We carry out methodical fault finding on domestic installations across Burgess Hill and the surrounding area, tracing the real cause rather than just resetting the trip and hoping it doesn’t happen again.
COMMON FAULTS WE DIAGNOSE
- Consumer unit or RCD nuisance tripping
- Dead sockets, switches or entire circuits
- Flickering, dimming or buzzing lights
- Intermittent faults that only show up occasionally, making them hard to pin down
- Warm sockets, switches or plugs, or a burning smell
- Shocks or tingles from an appliance, tap or switch
OUR APPROACH
Fault finding is a process of elimination, not guesswork. We start with a visual inspection of the consumer unit, accessories and any recent work, then use calibrated test equipment to isolate the affected circuit and take insulation resistance, continuity and earth loop impedance readings. This lets us confirm exactly where a fault sits – a damaged cable, a failed accessory, water ingress, or a loose connection – before any work is carried out, so you’re not paying to have parts replaced on a hunch.
WHEN THE FAULT ISN’T IN YOUR INSTALLATION
Not every fault originates inside your home. As part of our testing we check the earth loop impedance (Ze) and inspect the condition of the incoming supply and meter equipment. Where we find a high Ze reading or a deteriorated, corroded or damaged meter board, this is the responsibility of your Distribution Network Operator, not the homeowner or MLP Electrics. Across most of Sussex this is UK Power Networks (UKPN), and we’ve referred a number of clients to them for free repairs to their equipment – we’ll provide the technical details and readings UKPN need to act on the referral.
WHAT TO EXPECT
- An on-site visit with proper test equipment, not just a visual check
- A clear explanation of what’s causing the fault, in plain English
- An honest, upfront quote before any remedial work begins
- A minor works certificate or test report where the work carried out requires one
If you’ve got a recurring trip, a dead circuit or flickering lights that won’t go away, get in touch and we’ll get to the bottom of it.
